What is Omicron?

WHO called it a variant of concern based on the evidence that it has several mutations that decides its behaviour. It can be deadlier or deadliest if it transforms itself into an infectious mutant. Studies are still underway to assess its transmissibility, severity, and reinfection-rate. So, there is still more clarity required on this omicron variant.

Some researchers have stated that when a virus spreads from one person to another person, the likelihood of the virus mutation increases causing numerous infections. In short, the more opportunities a virus has to spread, the more opportunities it has to undergo changes. Scientists say that Omicron is a reminder that coronavirus will remain with us for a long time and keep on mutating. Thus, COVID-19 Pandemic is very far from over. 

Is Omicron more contagious and severe than other variants?

It is not currently known whether Omicron's variant is more contagious or severe than the previous covid strains. Studies are still going on to test its behaviour completely on all living beings and its transmissibility. This variant was first found in South Africa due to poor vaccination as there are more income inequalities in the society. Thus, the government could not provide ample vaccination across the nation and Delta / other variants mutated and transformed into Omicron. 

However, at present there are no serious cases of Omicron and no death is reported. It is advisable to remember all the precautions and medications that we had taken to avoid the delta spread. Vaccinations are still the last hope with wearing a mask and maintaining 6 feet distance.

It is still not confirmed what exact symptoms are shown in Omicron infection. 

COVID-19 vaccines still effective in tackling the omicron variant?

Scientists are still looking for gaps in the vaccine's efficacy. However, information on this part is also very limited. Still available covid vaccines and boosters’ shots are last hope. WHO believes that vaccines and boosters shot offers some protection and prevents severe disease or death. So, it is necessary to get both doses of vaccination at time to get proper protection shields. It is also assumed that T-cells also provide natural immunity to covid virus. However, it is still advised that you should take all doses of vaccines. 

Can a person get reinfected with this omicron variant if he/she had delta infection?

Yes. It is observed that people who have taken their vaccines or have naturally induced immunity against delta virus can still get omicron infection. There are some cases of omicron reinfection that are found. Information on this note is still limited and studies are still going on. Is RT-PCR still effective in testing omicron variants?
