The connection between HIV/AIDS and the new variant Omicron |
The Omicron variant that mutated from the novel Covid-19 was discovered in South Africa on 24 November. Since then, this variant has spread swiftly over the world. However, it is still unclear where and how this variant originated. But one thing that is definite regarding this new variant is that it did not arise from any of the other versions of COVID-19 known as Alpha, Beta, or Delta. It begins with the deadly coronavirus which has not stopped spreading since the last year.
There are several explanations about the origin of this
novel variant by medical researchers. While some believe Omicron originated in
a distant location of southern Africa, others believe it evolved in infected
animals like rats and subsequently made its way to humans. Another theory says
that this variant is introduced by a person with a weakened immune system, such
as someone undergoing cancer treatment or someone living with uncontrolled HIV/AIDS.
Due to a lack of immunity, this virus is able to mutate further leading to this
level of threat in all countries.
This new novel variant Omicron has over fifty different
mutations. At least 30 of these are found in the spike protein, where the virus
utilizes it to enter the host cells. According to a particular theory, the huge
number of HIV patients in South Africa may be responsible to create an optimal
environment for the emergence of Omicron. HIV affects over two-thirds of the global
population in South Africa. In an interview with Medical News Today a research
associate at the University of Cambridge, Dr. Steven Kemp said that the high frequency of HIV may have led
to the evolution of the Omicron form. He further added that however, it is
crucial to note that HIV is not the only disease that can produce immunosuppression
in people. Therefore World Health Organization has also classified it as a
"variant of concern".
This
new Covid variant has caused widespread concern, with countries prohibiting flights
from South Africa, where it was identified, to other African countries. Several
governments have strengthened restrictions to control the variant. These
days, the global HIV/AIDS pandemic is barely acknowledged. In 2020, more than
600,000 individuals died from AIDS-related illnesses worldwide, while international
attention was focused merely on COVID-19.
